To investigate cum “granuloma” salis: Chronic granulomatous disease vs Crohn's disease
2020
Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare inherited disorder of phagocyte oxidative metabolism that, in addition to infectious complications, is characterized by abnormal inflammatory response leading to the formation of granulomas in multiple tissues both in the presence and absence of microorganisms. Inflammation often involves the gastrointestinal tract and the clinical, laboratory, and histological characteristics are hardly distinguishable from Crohn's disease (CD). CGD is indeed a rare but important differential diagnosis of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) especially when occurring in early life and its early detection is crucial to improve the prognosis. The paper report…
Cytokine therapy of neoplastic and inflammatory disease.
1993
Cytokines have been widely tested in clinical trials during recent years and beneficial responses have been observed in a variety of malignant, infectious and autoimmune diseases. Interferon-alpha induces remissions in patients with certain hematological malignancies such as hairy cell leukemia and chronic myelogenous leukemia. A proportion of patients with chronic viral hepatitis is cured upon application of interferon-alpha. Treatment with interferon-gamma reduces the number of infections in patients with chronic granulomatous disease. In addition, several chronic infections with intracellular pathogens also respond to treatment with this cytokine. With the exception of some patients with…
Leprosy: report of a case with severe peripheral neuropathy
2009
Leprosy (Hansen's disease) is a chronic granulomatous infectious disease, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, with cutaneous and neurological manifestations. Leprosy is very rare in Europe but some cases are reported, especially among people coming from endemic areas. Here, we report a case of Hansen's disease and emphasize the importance of a prompt diagnosis and treatment also in non-endemic areas.
Actinomadura pelletieri mycetoma--an atypical case with spine and abdominal wall involvement.
2011
We describe a case of mycetoma caused by Actinomadura pelletieri with simultaneous involvement of the spine, abdominal wall and retroperitoneal space in a man who had suffered from ‘Madura foot’ 10 years earlier. The characteristics of this case were analysed and contextualized among those of other cases of mycetoma caused by other micro-organisms found through a review of the international literature. The rarity of the disease in industrialized countries and its possible atypical presentations may hinder a prompt diagnosis. Culture techniques that allow detection of slow-growing fungi and actinomycetes should be routinely used when dealing with tissue samples from patients from tropical an…
Granulocytenfunktionsdefekte bei granulomatser muco-cutaner candidiasis
1975
Diagnostic Significance of Epithelioid Granulomas in Crohnʼs Disease in Children
1990
Out of 528 children with Crohn's disease in a Multicenter Paediatric Crohn's Disease Study Group, 37 cases had epithelioid granulomas but did not fulfill defined radiographic criteria of the disease. Follow-up studies including clinical, biochemical, radiological, endoscopic, and histological investigations were done in these patients. Initially, all patients showed clinical symptoms and 27 of them had biochemical signs of chronic inflammation. After a mean follow-up of 3 years, all 37 children treated for Crohn's disease got a complete upper gastrointestinal series with small bowel followthrough and 8 children in addition had barium enemas. Colonoscopies were done in 23 patients. Radiograp…
